If you spent a Sunday afternoon at Go Long Flag Football, you probably remember Coach Mike Ockrim—the barefoot dad pacing the sideline, calling plays for whichever of his four kids was on the field that year.

For 11 straight seasons Mike and a crew of equally committed neighbors turned a simple backyard idea into a weekly festival where touchdowns mattered less than the friendships built after the whistle.

Those Sundays are still Mike’s favorite fatherhood memories.

One of the kids under his whistle was Nicholas Ockrim, now 18, a recent Hinsdale South graduate and three-sport varsity athlete.

When Nick aged out of Go Long, he never really left: he grabbed a whistle, became a ref, and started coaching the younger divisions.

Today he serves as a board member and Program Director for Sunday Funday Sports, determined to give other kids the same stress-free joy he grew up with.

Why Sunday Funday Sports?

Travel teams, year-round practices, private trainers—grown-ups have turned youth sports into a job. We’re flipping it back.
