From Sidelines to Style Lines: Game-Day Hair Playbooks for NFL Flag Football Girls

A Sunday Funday Sports x The Salon Sapphire feature

Meet Maya “Jet” Johnson

Maya is the kind of eighth-grader who jukes defenders, aces algebra, and still makes it to her post-game smoothie with every strand in place. Her secret weapon isn’t just speed—it’s strategy…hair strategy. Each Sunday morning, before lacing up for her NFL FLAG matchup, Maya sits at her kitchen island while her older sister works quick magic: two sleek boxer braids that won’t budge when she dives for a flag. By kick-off she feels as unstoppable as her favorite Bears wide-out, and the scoreboard usually agrees.

Maya’s routine isn’t unique. Across Illinois—and 30-plus other states—girls’ flag football is exploding. The National Federation of State High School Associations counted 42,955 girl participants in 2023-24, more than doubling the previous year  . This fall the Illinois High School Association will run its first official state series, with practices opening August 11 and the State Final set for October 17-18, 2025  . Translation: ponytails, braids and buns are now as central to prep sports culture as pre-game playlists.

To celebrate, Sunday Funday Sports teamed up with The Salon Sapphire—a woman-owned studio led by stylist-coach Carey Ockrim  —to build a hair “playbook” as dynamic as a no-huddle offense.

  • Boxer Braids

    • Why athletes love it: Lie flat under helmets, distribute tension evenly, and stay put all day.

    • Quick how-to: Make a center part, French-braid each side down to the nape, secure with snag-free elastics, and finish with a dab of edge control to tame flyaways.

  • Bubble Pony

    • Why athletes love it: No braid skills needed; elastic “bubbles” keep layers contained and look great in photos.

    • Quick how-to: Pull hair into a high ponytail, add clear elastics every two inches, then gently tug each section to create evenly sized bubbles.

  • Space Buns + Headband

    • Why athletes love it: Keeps bangs back, balances weight on long hair, and scores big on TikTok style points.

    • Quick how-to: Part hair down the middle, twist each half into a bun at the crown, pin securely, and slide on a stretchy sport headband.

  • Sleek High Pony

    • Why athletes love it: Classic for sprinters and flag QBs—whip-proof and camera-ready.

    • Quick how-to: Brush gel-coated hair upward into a tight ponytail, wrap a small strand around the elastic to hide it, and mist with a sweat-proof spray.

  • Protective Cornrows / Knotless Box Braids

    • Why athletes love it: Ultra low-maintenance during multi-game tournaments and protects natural textures.

    • Quick how-to: Book a professional session at Salon Sapphire; keep scalp hydrated nightly with squalane or a light oil.

Pro tip from Carey: Switch up your part lines every week to avoid stressing the same follicles—think of it like rotating your cleats to extend their mileage.

Salon Sapphire’s Sideline Support

Carey opened her Clarendon Hills studio after years backstage at runway shows; now she uses that artistry to help girl athletes feel powerful, polished, and protected. Through the season, Salon Sapphire will:

  • Host “Braids & Blitzes” clinics every first Friday, teaching moms, dads, and teammates 15-minute game-day styles.

  • Offer a 10 % student-athlete discount on wash-and-style services—just show your Sunday Funday Sports roster.

  • Donate braid-care kits (silk scrunchies + travel-size leave-in) to the league’s scholarship players.

Because when your hair is handled, confidence skyrockets—and confident athletes take bigger swings, sprint harder routes, and lead louder huddles.

Beyond the Mirror: Why Hair Matters on the Field

  1. Safety: Loose strands obscure vision; tight, even tension prevents mid-play yanking.

  2. Performance: A secure style eliminates “ponytail-adjusting” micro-breaks that can sap focus across 40 snaps.

  3. Identity: Color-matched ribbons, team-logo clips, or creative part designs let girls own their look in a uniformed sport.

  4. Community: Pre-game braid circles double as informal team-bonding, boosting morale as effectively as any chant.

Maya’s Fourth-Quarter Flip

Remember Maya? State playoffs are looming. She’s swapped boxer braids for bubble pigtails in team colors—a nod to the playful side of a sport now on the IHSA marquee. When she bursts down the sideline, bubbles bob like yard-markers—and parents in the bleachers can’t help but smile.

Her message to younger girls watching: “If you can dream up a hairstyle, you can dream up a touchdown too.”

With sponsors like Salon Sapphire—and a league that sees her—the sky’s the limit.

Game on, glam on. See you (and your signature style) under the Sunday Funday Sports flags this fall.
