Sunday-Only Floor Hockey for Kids in Darien, Hinsdale & Westmont: What to Know About the 2027 NHL Street Season

Winter in the western suburbs means two things for a lot of families: the kids are stuck inside, and the weekend calendar is finally open. Our NHL Street Floor Hockey league is built for exactly that window.

Starting Sunday, January 10, 2027, Sunday Funday Sports brings eight weeks of co-ed floor hockey for grades K–8 to Hinsdale South High School in Darien. One hour a week, no weekday practices, no travel, gear included. Here’s what parents in Darien, Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Willowbrook, Burr Ridge, Westmont, and Downers Grove ask us most.

Who can play?

Boys and girls in kindergarten through 8th grade. We split into three divisions — K–2, grades 3–5, and grades 6–8 — so a kindergartner is never on the floor with a middle schooler. Rules are adjusted by age: younger divisions play shorter shifts and a slower pace, older divisions get a running clock and quick line changes.

No experience needed. Most of our players have never held a hockey stick before Week 1.

When and where are games?

Every Sunday from January 10 through February 28, 2027, at Hinsdale South High School, 7401 Clarendon Hills Rd., Darien, IL 60561. Games run between 4 and 7 pm, youngest divisions first:

  • Grades K–2: 4:00 pm

  • Grades 3–5: 5:00 pm

  • Grades 6–8: 6:00 pm

Exact times are confirmed by email once registration closes and we have final counts. Each player’s commitment is one hour, one day a week.

What does my child need to bring?

Gym shoes and a water bottle. That’s it. Every player gets a NHL Street team jersey, and games are played with lightweight plastic sticks and soft floor balls — no pads, no skates, no helmets. It’s hockey the way kids play it in a driveway, moved indoors to a real gym.

Can my child play with friends?

Yes. Sign up a group of up to 10 players as your own team, or register solo and we’ll place your child on a team with kids in the same division. Siblings in different grade bands can both play; they’ll just be in back-to-back time slots.

Who runs the games?

Trained coaches and referees ages 15 to 18 — high school students from the area who’ve been through our training and model the sportsmanship we expect from players. Adults supervise every session. Having teenagers lead the floor is a big part of why younger kids love it: the refs are the people they want to be in a few years.

How much does it cost, and what’s included?

One flat registration fee covers all eight games and the team shirt. There are no equipment lists, no fundraising, and no surprise charges. Sunday Funday Sports is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so the fee goes back into gym rental, gear, and paying our teen coaches and refs.

Why Sunday-only?

Because that’s what families told us they wanted. Travel leagues and club teams ask for three or four nights a week. Most kids in grade school don’t need that — they need to run around, learn a new sport, and be home for dinner. A single Sunday hour fits around school, other sports, and family time instead of competing with it.

Floor hockey is one of four Sunday leagues we run each year — along with NFL Flag Football, WIFFLE® Ball, and Young3 3-on-3 Basketball. Same idea every season: one hour, one day, every kid plays.

See you at the gym!
